OT Coolant/Antifreeze

How often do ya"ll change the coolant in your tractors? Does it loose its effectiveness after a certain length go time? Do you uses certain brands in newer tractors (JD for JD. Agco for Agco etc)?

I am asking because my JD 5303 is running warmer (not in HOT zone) than it usually does. I checked the radiator and noticed a pinkish white foam around the top of radiator and the cap. I thought I would replace the cap tomorrow.

Green stuff should be changed every 2-3 years. Most extended life coolants-A/F are good for 5 years. I don't think most people change it near often enough.

Well, pink foam probably ain't good. Is it foaming when it's running? I would drain, flush and refill with a good quality coolant. I would recommend John Deere Cool-Gard II. But then again, I work there. It is the best coolant on the market though.

The coolant/antifreeze doesn't loose it's ability to prevent freezing or transfer heat as long as it hasn't been diluted with too much water.

It does loose the rust/corrosion inhibitors and can allow the radiator to clog internally with rust and calcium deposits.

If the coolant is rusty red, the radiator may be partially clogged. Might try flushing the system and refilling with 50% antifreeze and distilled water. I would not use any type of flush, just open the drain valve on the radiator and block, and flood with the water hose while the engine is idled up.

Be sure the radiator isn't clogged externally with grass or sand.

As far as brands or types of antifreeze go, I wouldn't think a tractor would be too particular about that unless it's a new high tech model, something with an aluminum radiator. Change it about every 2 to 5 years.
