My father served in WWll and stayed in retiring as a Master Sgt. He served with the 31st infantry in New Guinea, Borneo & The Philippines. He was a 22 year old Buck Sgt. rifle squad leader with The 124th Regimental Combat Team. They are part of the unsung heroes of the Pacific campaign as they kept 14,000 of Yamamota's sailors tied up trying to take the Kokoda trail between Port Moresby and Buna. The Japanese had another 14,000 infantry soldiers there also. Port Moresby was close enough to Australia for their bombers to be used.
My father never talked much about his combat experience to his family & friends. What I know I learned from reading. There's been a few times at the VFW post I saw the older guys talking among themselves but not often. Sadly, most of them are gone now. We only have 2 members that served in Korea left in our Post. They all are my heroes and I don't think we will look upon their like again.
