In April of 1985, I was getting gas in town, the guy ran the station was a WWII veteran, had met him at American Legion meetings. When I paid, asked him what he was doing 40 years ago. He gave me the dumbest look, glanced at the calendar, his whole expression changed, and this came out. His unit had been through the Battle of the Bulge, then pulled back in February to France to rest. His platoon was loading trucks at a depot in France when the news of the surrender came out. Said he had a heckuva time keeping the crew working, half of them just wanted to go get drunk at the time. Then he thanked me for reminding him.
