David is right! Raise and lower using the palms of your hands. Never put your fingers between the blades. The knife can shift when being raised or lowered.
We used #5's for several years before moving up to our 350's.
Get a manual. They're easy to find and you can probably get one from this site.
James used a block of 2x4 wedged in between the blades and held in place by a bunji to keep the knife from shifting.
Being creative, you can probably invent something better than a block of wood to keep the knife from shifting when being raised or lowered.
Always be mindful of yourself and your clothing when around tractors and farm equipment. The human body is no match for them!
