Look What I Did Today!

Well, I got the parts back from the machine shop to fix my Fast Hitch. I put everything all back together and then decided to try it out! I hooked on to my JD No. 5 mower, and everything looks like it should work! I took some measurments, and I have to make my self a new pto shaft tomorrow, and then all I will have to do is install the pitman arm (brand new) and sharpen the blades and I will be ready to mow, now I just need some grass....

What kind of oil should I put in the gear box on the mower? I have about 2 gallons of straight 90 weight, I think I might put that in there, but I wasn't sure!

Here is a picture of the mower for the back side, I had to call out my professional photographer, mom, she is THE best! :) I discovered that I can raise and lower the mower all with the hand lever, and without ever leaving the tractor seat, so I thought that was pretty cool!

How does it look to all of you!?!? Bryce

What's that dirty white stuff on the ground??? I was out rotovating, chisel plowing and disking all day....ground was perfect.

Well I suppose that it looks as good as anything green can look, but to me, in order for a sickle bar mower to be real it needs to be a Dearborn belly mount like the farmer that I worked for as a kid had on his 8N. He really knocked down some hay with that rig!

Be careful with that mower, never put your fingers in there.

My dad had a friend that lost a finger when he was fastening mower up. He grabbed the blade to pick it up, the blade went down and lost a finger.

looking good there young blood !!! i wish i could get lucky and find some implements for good prices like you have. keep the pics coming, we all love pics :)

hahaha, smart a$$... :)

Well, that is the rest of our snow, that would be the south end of the meadow, and as you can see, across the road it is heavily treed, so it doesn't really get any sun!

The top end of the meadow is ready for tillage, but it is about 5 inches under water, but I am quickly draining it into the creek! The south end where the picture is, still has frost 4 inches in, so it will be ready in about a month!

I am hoping that by May 1st I can have my wheat in, not sure if it is going to happen or not, but if I don't make that date, I will put Oats in! Bryce

Implements seem to be the easy part around here! A friend that has a Co-op E3 had one of these mowers in his yard for "decoration" and it had a flowering vine growing up the sickle! He gave that one to me, and then another guy in our local club found out that I had been given one, and he had 4 or 5, and he gave me his parts mower, so I put the two together to get this one, and then I have another one I traded a walk behind horse plow for, and it is almost field ready...

I have 7 plows, 3 trailed 2 x 14, 1 2way case, ferguson 3 bottom, and the two belly plows for my farmalls.

2 discs 7foot and 12foot

5 sickle mowers, 3 No. 5's and 2 Ford 501's

A really nice two section spike tooth drag and cedar pull bar that I made.

Snow blower, 2 back blades, three point chisel plow,

3 balers (one is a Case NCMT for parts, if any one needs any let me know and I will take it off and send it to you for the cost of shipping, it is going to be crushed here pretty soon!)

Horse drawn disc, and two "garden cultivators"

2 hay rakes and 2 horse drawn dump rakes

Along with a few other things that I can't remember what they are!!! Yesterday I had a shocking realization, I was in the "Junk Yard" as one member of the family calls it, and I got lost and couldn't find on of my mowers!!!! Then I sated thinking, man where in the world did I put it?!?!?! Well, I did find it, inside the barn wing behind a little trailer.. Not exactly sure why I put it in there, but there it sits!

David is right! Raise and lower using the palms of your hands. Never put your fingers between the blades. The knife can shift when being raised or lowered.

We used #5's for several years before moving up to our 350's.

Get a manual. They're easy to find and you can probably get one from this site.

James used a block of 2x4 wedged in between the blades and held in place by a bunji to keep the knife from shifting.

Being creative, you can probably invent something better than a block of wood to keep the knife from shifting when being raised or lowered.

Always be mindful of yourself and your clothing when around tractors and farm equipment. The human body is no match for them!

Nice job! May have to rig our #5 up the old SC! We had a fast hitch mower but it was such a pain in the butt we sent it and it's parts mower down the road!

(quoted from post at 05:55:02 03/27/14) Be careful with that mower, never put your fingers in there.

My dad had a friend that lost a finger when he was fastening mower up. He grabbed the blade to pick it up, the blade went down and lost a finger.

My dad always stressed about the finger thing.....then one day he has the bar off for some reason and it slipped and flipped when he was carrying it across the yard and cut a 6" L in his inner thigh. I remember mom screaming when she saw it and then rushed him to the doctor to get sewn up. He came home and still milked the 25 cows that night...that was 50 years ago and dad is still alive!

He cut many acres with the JD B and old 7 foot #5. It had that handy dandy foot lift assist on it to lift up the bar. I think it is still sitting in the trees back home.

We later got a New Idea 10' trailer mower and pulled it with a MF 135D with Multi-power...now that was a mowing machine!

Oh yes, I know! You guys don't have to worry about me... I worry and am usually OVERLY cautious about everything! My grandpa lost both of his thumbs on a log splitter, chopped on off Saturday, went to the hospital, and then chopped the other off Sunday and had to go back!!

You all should note that I am wearing my OH SO SAFE work shoes! Croc's to be exact! A lot of people give me flack about wearing them, but in the winter when the drive way and decks are that packed slippery snow, they are all I wear! I find that they have amazing traction on slick stuff, like ice! Bryce

Thats the thing, any machine you ever ask about, there will always be "oh they are great" and "oh they are a pos" When I was asking everyone I know, ALMOST everyone said that theses John Deere No. 5's were one of the best sickle mower ever made....

I have never used one, or even seen one work in person, but judging by the videos on You Tube that I have seen, they appear to work very well!

I would be more than happy to take a few pictures of how I hooked it up if you would like, pretty simply actually! I'm not sure how you would do it if you didn't have the fast hitch, because the FH drawbar is what I actually bolted to the mower...

You can see on the back of the tractor the bright red FH parts, I stuck em on, and shot em on the tractor! NOT something I usually do! I ended up just having them rebuilt because there was sooooo much wear in them... Bryce
