I've never done a 400, but have done many 140"s, 317's, etc., which are set up pretty much the same, but even more compact.
On the ones I've done, once you remove the battery tray, the steering gear can be removed, once you get the darned-near inaccessible attaching bolts removed. I"d be REALLY surprised if the 400 cannot be removed the same way as well.
Have you removed the battery tray and looked at the steering gear from that perspective?
