When I was a kid in the late '40's and early '50's we controlled weeds and pests with cultivation and crop rotation. I joined the Marine Corps in 1953.
By the time I left the Corps in 1963, chemicals had taken over. No young farmer was considered up and coming, and worthy of renting land to, if he didn't regularly drench his crops in all manner of chemicals.
Is it a coincidence that 20 to 25 years ago all of those same farmers began dying of all sorts of weird cancers?
