Case in point- my FIL at 57 or thereabouts years old got an infected tooth. The infection spread and rotted out his heart valves causing him to have a series of strokes. I could play the blame game and point out that his doctors missed all the classic signs of an infection for the better part of 2 weeks, but the fact is he knew he had some bad teeth and did less than nothing about it. There are limits to being tough and stoic and cheap.
I think that's called endocarditis. Very serious condition.
