Biomass was becoming popular in Northern Michigan and Wisconsin. At one point it got to where brush piles and tree tops were worth almost as much money as the tree logs. Foresters I worked with were trying to figure out which way to go, sell the tops and brush and reseed without the organic matter (used to chip the tops & brush and re plant in the biomass) or use some of the tree top money to buy fertilizer to boost up the seedlings. The biomass was being turned into wood pellets or chipped and sent to paper mills and power plants for boiler fuel.
