About 17 years ago, once I was sent from the shop to get a starter drive replaced for a guy with a large crew held up from their custom spud harvesting. I had done it many times and quickly had the starter out of the big IH tractor.

As I changed the drive the crew of workers were quite grumpy about not making any money. Two more harvesters with trucks were moving close by in the same field. I wanted to do my best, and quickly had the tractor fixed. The driver started it just after I grabbed my small tool box off the front weights, with a number of wrenches in hand.

I moved to the side out of the way of the tractor and harvester, and immediately put my tools in the box. I was facing south and the tractor was pointed north in the rows.

Then without any clew, I felt my arm thrust down into the dirt and my leggs ran in a burst carrying my body around the circle; wherein, my arm was at the center point. Then in the second or less this took I found myself looking into the center of the 2nd forward axle of this large spud truck. I know someone from above had been watching over me, and caused me to move before this truck backing up to get under the boom of the harvester, could have crushed me!!! I remember thinking, "Oh my toolbox is flatter than a pancake!"

However when the young scared driver moved the truck forward the toolbox had been pushed just inside of the inside tires as they were deep in the soft dirt.

The owner of the custom harvesters was driving one of the tractors and saw this happen, and came running over to give HELL! to the 18 year old driver! I was certain that I was more guilty than anyone, for the incident, simply because I had tried to do my best. With this feeling in my heart, I turned to the owner and spoke with a LOUD VOICE telling him to be still!

"This young man is a good driver and had stopped immediately seeing my body in the rear view mirror as I burst out the side! More than anyone I should be angry with the head of this crew, who'd demanded quick repair with many onlookers! However, I am not angry! I am thankful to God for my life! Go on with your day praying that saftey will be all among you!!!"

This is a true experience. The full shock of it did not reach me until I returned home after work and told my young beautiful wife and 3 young kids, "I should have been killed today, but was protected!!!" My wife's face turned white and this made me feel her possible side of the story.

Think how many of us have lived through times of possible tragedy. Among all of you good tractor men and women, I pray that our faith in God will only grow stronger. Let us be good tools in the hands of God for helping ourselves and our neighbors be safer in our ways!

Alive and blessed with 4 kids and a beautiful wife!.................Milan H. Dilworth......Rupert, ID

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
