: : : I have a JD 1010U. It has been in the family for a long time and has been a GREAT tractor. It is a wide front end Diesel with power steering and Live PTO. It has two rear remotes and the paint and decals are new a couple years ago.A couple of questions for you JD experts:It has a set a flat top fenders on it that they say came with the tractor. They look like a 2010 fender but some people tell me you Could order a Deluxe fender. Also it has the shift up by the steering wheel and I have never seen another in this area like that. Is this a low production item? Also what is the vaule of this tractor as i am thinking of selling it. It runs and starts great is a 9 on the scale of 1 to 10 in looks. New front tires and good rear tires. Tractor sets low as I use it for a mowing Tractor. Any help would be great. Thanks Larry. : : Yes, you could put the deluxe fenders on the 1010, and you're right: They're the same as on the 2010. A lot of the Utility models had column shifters, but few of the other models had it. : : I might be interested in it once you decide what the price is (I won't suggest one, since I am interested), as long as it isn't too long a trip to go look at it. I'm in the Raleigh, NC area. Feel free to call me at 919-271-0230. E-mail: stan.disbrow@ericsson.com I'd like a diesel utility lawn mowing machine..... : I just bought a 1961 1010U for $2000 which is on the low side of how much they usually cost. That is because it was pretty rough. That is, it needs new wiring, seat, steering wheel, etc. So after putting it in fairly decent order, I will of course be spending some bucks. Evidently it sat under a tree for several years. What I hear about the 1010 is that it wasn't one of the better JDs but still is probably better than many tractors. If it is as good as it sounds, I'd think you could get from $3,000 to $4,500 but that is very dependent on condition. The 1010 is the 430 from the engine back. The 1010 uses a 4-cyl engine that had an interesting feature. It's a wet sleeve engine, but uses a 'decked' sleeve set, instead of individual sleeves for each cylinder. The idea was that you could change all four sleeves at the same time, making overhauls much easier. In practice, the deck had a lot of sealing troubles, and the rebuilder usually had to pull the deck a couple of times to get it sealed correctly. That meant it took much longer to do a rebuild than a standard motor did! When I was growing up, the familiy business was a JD dealership. I can recall when a mechanic was working on a 1010, by the sound of the cursing from the repair bay due to leaky seals.......... Still, it's a decent machine when it's finally together. The engine is more poweful than the 2-cyl that it replaced. That tends to cause ring and pinion problems the 430 didn't have. Especially on the RU version, with the oversized tires. To be fair, the 1010 had less problems in this area than the 435 did with that screaming Detroit Diesel 2-cycle! Your pricing is quite accurate, by the way.
