I've lost quite a number of friends who were either drunk driving or killed by drunk drivers.

But even though I didn't name him here, I'll still defend him a little.

It was back in the days before there was so much education on the matter - and he wasn't really all that drunk at the time. Somebody rear-ended him at a stop sign. Another friend had an open beer in the car...

Most people would have fought it and got off. He chose to take his medicine and pay the fines.

Not saying what he did was right, nor would he - but I view what he did as much different than somebody doing it in this day and age. It's a different world.

Back then you just didn't think too much about having three of four beers at a bar and driving home. You thought you were being responsible if you drove slow and easy. "Drunk" was slurring your words and swerving on the road.
