Oh yes, when we had stock cows we had more new calves right before a storm. More than once I carried a newborn calf home in the muck and freezing rain and snow. Most times I could throw the calf in the back of the pickup but sometimes hoofing it was the only choice. I learned the hard way to walk up behind the calf and pounce on it with my whole body or it'd get away. A half-day old calf can run a long ways and disappear in the snow storm before it lays down again. We once had a cow drop a calf out in the corn stalks right before a late march blizzard.
