I usually checked them over before dark and penned up any that i thought might calve that night and still had the odd one that dropped one outside and ofcourse in a mud hole or snowbank
I fed late afternoon and most calves came during the day but the ones having a bit of trouble usually waited till the small hours.
But lets face it, nature never meant for cows to calve in winter, if one did it was most times a goner. It was when man started to breed with them and decided time of calving when the trouble really started.
I have the odd bison calve in mid winter as well,..some live,..some die, a live calf ends often up being a runt anyway, i rather have them kick the bucket right of the bat so i can ship mommy to the meat plant as that is were they go when they F up
Never seen a live cold weather born one with froze ears tail or hooves. They are sure tough little buggers.
As for bison not calving ahead of a winterstorm i ain't sure. I have them start calving end march/april, i don't check, i just count the new arrivals next time i go feed, sometimes i don't see them till they are a week or more old(lots of bush to hide in) :lol:
