When I was a kid my job every morning before school was to fire the tank heater. If I remember right I used paper sacks or anything that would get hot fast to start it. That got the draft going the right direction so it went out the chimney instead of back out the lid. The in went the scrap wood to keep it going. Once the wood was burning I filled it to the top with cobs, shut the lid, turned the little round draft door to throttle it down and it was good to go. Then I had to take a quick bath before school so I didn't smell like smoke for the rest of the day. The neighbor had one of those fuel oil drip heaters. I thought that fuel oil heater would be a lot easier but dad didn't think so. His reasoning was fuel oil cost money and we had plenty of cobs and I was available to fire it. I didn't agree with him at the time but now I tend to agree with his thinking. Jim
