We have to use tire chain several time. 9000' elev in the mountain. YES stop and put them on BEFORE you are stuck. I always put them on the front tires. Hang them over the top of the tire, so the end is just toughing the ground in the back of the tire. Back up so the hook is in the front of the tire. Easy to get at.
