You have to declare which one every time you renew your CDL. I just had my physical yesterday, which you now need to file with SOS by January 31, or loose your CDL.
While we're on the subject. That nice pamphlet we got in the mail said we didn't need a DOT number any more. I called SOS, they said they don't get in between the Federal and individuals so call Michigan DOT. I couldn't get them to answer the phone the next two days, so I called DC. They answered. She said can you gross 10001 pounds, yup, then you need the DOT number, but I'm hauling my own stuff, again, can you gross 10001 pounds, yup, but I don't go out of State and I'm not in business, same question, yup, I need a DOT number.
