The Marine Corps sent me to school to learn to navigate transport planes with search radar, which relies on radar targets and check points. After going through school, it never became a full time job in the Corps, but I still have the habit of staying aware of where I am and where I'm going.
I rely on my GPS, but it's not infallible. You still need to know if it's giving you the proper info.
I have a friend who is a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel, bomber pilot type. I commented once that GPS had rendered my search radar navigation training obsolete. He replied, "Not if the enemy jams your GPS".
