Next to a hydrastat a good running Fordson Dexta will eat you alive (slowly !). I'm a Deere man to but I've seen the dexta beat them all execept a hydra.
: : : Have yall seen the slow tractor races at antique tractor club get-togethers? My club (West Ga. 2 Cylinder Club) has slow races and tractor pulls twice a year. My JD 40 Standard (wide front) has been very successful in winning these races. It can get down low and make the tires jerk every time a piston fires. Theoretically, a 40 Utility or M tuned the same should be slower due to smaller diameter rear tires, but I have not found one yet. I hear that a JD 50 should perform the best due to lower overall gearing than other models, but I have not seen the numbers for the ratios. So, has anybody got a super-slow tractor or some super-slow tips?

: : I used to have a Ford 1720 (all right, not antique), which is similar in size to your 40. It had a creeper pre-range gear set that gave 12 speeds LOWER than 1st! I used to use it in 'creeper 9' to follow me along my driveway, without an operator, while I tossed oversize stones into the bucket. I had to walk back every couple of minutes to adjust the steering wheel.

: : I mention this, because the JD 420/430 series had an optional low range input gear set that sat in the center frame in place of the direction reverser. If one of these show up it will go 1/4 the speed of your 40 in low (given the same engine speed).....

: Now that 420 low range gear set would be the thing to have. I need to put an ad in the classified looking for one of them. I bet they're about as scarce as a Waterloo Boy with original paint.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
