Tip: Unless the tread is pretty much worn off your tires I'd recommend spending the extra for the "duo grip" style.
My experience (I have nearly new tires...) was the ladder chains tend to end up falling into the deep valleys between the tread lugs. This greatly reduces their effectiveness.
I field-modified my ladder chains by adding links between each pair of cross chains, effectively turning them into duo grip style. The cross are now held on top of the tread lugs and work great.
