We have one at the farm, I'd agree with the others on moisture. My intent was to have a load on the single axle dump and use the chute load it into th hopper/spreader. Ideally, coarse, dry mason's sand would be best.
Its a serious problem at our place, walking horses on those slick winter conditions, even with winter shoes on, so we needed some kind of solution. We can get sand early, dry it in the arena, load it, then spread as needed.
I had one horse that was high strung, I think abused by someone in the past, it was not careful like some others who were smart about dealing with it, all 4 legs went up and that 1000 + lbs of meat slammed the snow pack/ice, will never forget having that one on a lead shank, and trying to get those conditions eliminated, using that hopper/spreader was part of it.
