Well, there is actually a United States Lawnmower Racing Association, and in our state there is the Michigan Lawnmower Racing Association. In mid-Michigan there has been a very active racing group called the Maple Rapids Grass Kickers. They take the mower deck off the machine, soup up the engine and race on a dirt/sand oval. Fun to watch. They put a lot of money in their machines so I'm not surprised that you found one for sale at a price that probably surprised you.
