There are two shift rails in it. When one of mine broke,it would go in to reverse then if I tried to go in to a forward gear it would end up in two gears at once. I don't know what happens of the other rod breaks?
Look down under the front of the cowl to the right hand side of the chain coupler.(brake pedal side) There's a cover on there. Take that off and move your shift and see if both of those rods are moving alright.
