He won't retire because his job IS his hobby! With many older workers, they became so absorbed by their trades that they would not know what else to do with themselves. That is not always the case though... I found myself in retirement without any planning or previous knowledge. One day the outfit I was working for just got a bit too overbearing. I looked over the financials and discovered that I had enough to become debt free and even have money left over. Next day I gave my notice and have been to busy to think about it ever since.
