Well, today is the first day of retirement. After 35 years learning my craft it was time to hand it off to a new crew. So now I can spend my time "messing about with tractors". Celebrated by bush hogging, mending small equipment issues, and pulling out old fencing.

Congratulations!!! Oh how I love to putter, doing things that need doing, but that you're not in a rush to do. A fellow can be very content just puttering every day... I's still at the grindstone for 7 more years (almost), but I get 8 weeks off each year, and I love my practice retirement...

I'm envious...

Congratulations Steve!
I must be doing something wrong. I started working in my profession 40 years ago and have at least another 5 to go.
Let me know how the retirement thing goes...

Glad you can retire while you still can enjoy some things that you like to do. I work with a guy that is 73, has 3 retirements, plenty of money, his wife and he have health problems but he wont retire. I told myself I will never be rich but when I get my time in Im going, I have lots of hobbies and would like to see lots of things.

I went out at 50 years and 4 days. Best thing I ever did had a heart attack 5 years later. Been up and down ever since. Anyway we had 5 years of fun before the well caved in on me.
I saw to many guys who waited and then either died on the job or immediately after.
Enjoy what you have left now you never know when your time is up.

I have never really retired. I just slowly quit doing some things. Stopped doing any customer shop work last fall. Then this summer my second oldest son took over the daily cattle chores. So I am just doing what I want when I want. Had to work the better part of 45 years to get to this point. It is different once you do not HAVE to do it. I find I am still just as busy but on things I want to do. This week I will be helping build a Hoop building for a friend. Going to be kind of fun.

Congratulations. I am retiring next week Fri (Sept 6) with 45 yrs 2 days. May we have a GREAT retirement. Dale

Steve,
Congrats on retiring from your professional job.I have 32 years in my craft and 15 years until retirement age.Having children later in life is going to make me work that long.I have no complaints about it as long as my health is good.

41 down 6 more to go. But I can't say I'm really keeping the nose to the grindstone. 100% commission sales means I work as much as I want when I want. I really do want to increase by 20% every year though.

I "retired" in 2008 after 40 years. Always said when it gets where it is not fun any more, it is time to go. So I went. I have never been so busy in my life. My wife has a list for me every day. For some reason, that list keeps getting longer, too. But last summer, I decided I was allergic to work. Every time I started out to the shop, I would break out in a bad sweat. It didn't help the situation that it was over 100 and high humidity.

Congrats! Enjoy it you deserve it, I'm 39 so a long way off for me, especially being self employed, things are getter worse rather than better right now. Have fun in retirement.

Congratulations. Been called retired for the last 8 years. Like the other poster never been so busy. Takes a completely different mind set. You have to remember if you start something IT does not have to be done today, there is always the next day. Also expect to have a lot of friends.
They will think since you are retired you can help them any time. Hardest thing for me to do was learn to say no. Had folks having me doing all sorts of things. Still have some responsibility at the dealership and here at the farm but kinda in the background and loving it.
Heading out west here in about three weeks for a spell.

Been semi-retired since March of last year. Still working 3 days a week since I married a "young un" who won't turn 65 till November of this year.. Still need health insurance for her til then, and then I'm pulling the plug completely. Can't wait. Congratulations.

He won't retire because his job IS his hobby! With many older workers, they became so absorbed by their trades that they would not know what else to do with themselves. That is not always the case though... I found myself in retirement without any planning or previous knowledge. One day the outfit I was working for just got a bit too overbearing. I looked over the financials and discovered that I had enough to become debt free and even have money left over. Next day I gave my notice and have been to busy to think about it ever since.
