The nikon 800 series takes excellent pictures when everything is on the right setting.(there is an auto setting) You will have some AF failure problems,particularly when shooting rapidly or the subject is moving.Would estimate the AF failure rate at 10-15% on total pictures taken until one is familiar with camera settings.Notice AF problems in low light shooting.Think the 800's have CCD sensors and the newer ones have CMOS sensors which are bigger,better. Am impressed with pics that larry/the/corner/guy posts on here.Your 500 series maybe more advanced than the 800's.
