as for the computer, I went to tech school on computers and had a shop for 6 years, repairs maintenance and sales. take the advice of whomever it was and buy the toshiba......my last toshiba laptop went strong for almost 8 years, this one's going on year 2. hard to beat em.
my personal preference of operating system would be Linux, but that's not something anyone is going to be getting into, windows 7 was/is good and stable, I haven't used 8 yet so I can't compare. I will say that MS has gotten much better through the years with their operating system 'updates'.....used to be before I'd install their newest version of operating system, I'd give them at least 6 months of it on the market, by then they'd have SOME of the bugs worked out
