I feel Stoopid! We towed it to a real mechanic who diagnosed it as broken timing belt. I figured a V6 would have had a timing chain instead of a belt. I didn't bother to see if the rotor turned when I cranked it. I found out the hard way that the rotor was bolted on instead of a press fit. The event timing was good, since the water pump has been leaking for a little while and the labor involved is nearly the same as you need to remove one to fix the other. Thanks for the answers from those who cared enough to post!
