I feel Stoopid! We towed it to a real mechanic who diagnosed it as broken timing belt. I figured a V6 would have had a timing chain instead of a belt. I didn't bother to see if the rotor turned when I cranked it. I found out the hard way that the rotor was bolted on instead of a press fit.
The event timing was good, since the water pump has been leaking for a little while and the labor involved is nearly the same as you need to remove one to fix the other.
