They were cut from red or white oak, white oak being less likely to break along the grain. They were cut at either 6 inch lumber at the root or 4 inch. Straight taper to a rounded point about 2x2 size. Length was 8 ft for the 2x4 ones and usually 10 ft for the 2x6 ones, sometimes 12 ft.
Dad had a Jayhawk hay sweep(stacker) that used them. I also helped close out a lumber yard once by buying 3 bundles (x4) and some loose ones. I hopw someday to get to build my Model T depot hack.
