Dad replaced his pump in his 1988 Chevy, and also in my 96 Chevy truck. Both, fortunately, had only half a tank of fuel in them at the time. Both times he would loosen the tank and lower it on 2 rolling jacks, then he would lift the truck over the tank. This way he could roll the tank out, replace the pump, then roll it back under, without draining the tank! My 96 took less than a half day!
