I had 3 big cottonwood stems, 3 to 4 foot diameter each, growing out of a single root ball. Took a guy with a D8 about half an hour to get it all out- that was one tough tree!
Neighbor made it into firewood- I was a really nice guy, and dragged the logs over onto his place to make it more convenient for him to process it. At least that was the official story- actually, I didn't want to have to deal with it after he gave up on trying to split the pieces!
