Are we talking Lakes or Ponds
Gar fish are very hard to kill off. They are considered the shark of fresh water so they have a place in large lakes but can destroy a pond.
Even using a pond cleaning chemical like rotenone will kill every other fish before it even starts to effect gar. The reason is they can gulp air from the surface. A alligator gar can even live over 2 hours out of water and some other species of the gar family are similar.
If we were talking ponds I would suggest a large drag net putting back the wanted fish.
