After the flood water receded I found 20 dead gar, 18-24 inches, belly up. Something ate them. I'm sure our lakes are going to have some unwelcome fish. Any way to get rid of them and not kill the rest of the fish?

Are we talking Lakes or Ponds

Gar fish are very hard to kill off. They are considered the shark of fresh water so they have a place in large lakes but can destroy a pond.

Even using a pond cleaning chemical like rotenone will kill every other fish before it even starts to effect gar. The reason is they can gulp air from the surface. A alligator gar can even live over 2 hours out of water and some other species of the gar family are similar.

If we were talking ponds I would suggest a large drag net putting back the wanted fish.

catch em and eat em...i used to catch them on trotlines, jugs,or shoot them when sun's high in the sky...you can see them come up to breathe...backstrap is delicious

Lot of folks around here "fish " for them with a modified bow & arrow. Have a fishing reel on the bow, line attached to the arrow. When they come up for air shot them, then reel em in.
Some of the bigger lakes in Texas have gar up to 100 lbs.

Only Gar I have ever seen in Minn was in lake Stalker near Battle Lake. They were swimming around near the surface in the middle of the day. Some of the locals younger guys were spearing and shooting with bow and arrow. They threw some in the trash and wow, what a stink. Was a very good Walleye lake but haven't been there for over 20 years.
