Esp when I was applying granular herb I would replace the clutch every couple of years. Quitting herbicide helped some.
There is a outfit in central Iowa I think that makes a kit to convert to top wheel drive. He set up the kit cause he was having just this problem. I was getting close to get one but the price tag for my front fold was about $1500 and I knew I was gonna be replacing the planter soon.
I think the straight bar planters was a bit more reasonable due to not dodging around the shaft to drive the wings.
As to why the clutch is problematic. The components are the same as what was designed for a 4-6 row plate planter and Deere tried to stretch it just a bit too far using it on a 12 row finger pickup.
