JD 7000 clutch slipping

Anyone have any ideas why a clucth slips intermittently on a JD 7000 planter ?
I replaced the spring a few years ago. Thanks for any ideas to help.

First check the teeth on the clutch dogs to see if they are "square' versus worn at an angle relative to the drive shaft. The clutch dogs do wear. Do all the drive chains flex going around the idlers and sprockets? Worn bearings create more drag on the drive system. Usually worn bearings make the chains jump and pull the tensioners loose. My money is on the clutch dogs. Those drive shafts are a stinker to drive out to get to the clutches. A change that was made for the better on the 7200 and 1750.

Try soaking the clutch assembly down real good with some diesel, or even ether. Using a small screwdriver, with the clutch dis-engaged, dig into the 'female' end, and pry the gook out. Then, flush and do it again. When you've done that, make sure you hit all of the grease fittings well. Mine had a build-up of dirt and grease in it that kept the thing from engaging more than maybe half way. I make sure it's cleaned out every season now before I start to plant.

If I remember right the clutch is a kind of a ratchet type. The teeth, if you will call them that, wear a little slanted. While you're planting the clutch will slowly push apart against the spring and then sit there and ratchet. A little work with an angle grinder will get the surfaces flat again. There's probably no need to to buy new parts if you can get those surfaces flat again.

I had that happen with my 7000. Monitor would go off for a few beats and then all was fine for awhile. When I had the old IH 58 plate planter there was no monitor so I didn't know the clutch was doing this one spring. I was planting beans and the clutch would push apart, ratchet a bit and then re-engage. Made for a skippy stand of beans in one 80 acre field that year. After that happened I rigged up a monitor. Common issue.

Esp when I was applying granular herb I would replace the clutch every couple of years. Quitting herbicide helped some.

There is a outfit in central Iowa I think that makes a kit to convert to top wheel drive. He set up the kit cause he was having just this problem. I was getting close to get one but the price tag for my front fold was about $1500 and I knew I was gonna be replacing the planter soon.

I think the straight bar planters was a bit more reasonable due to not dodging around the shaft to drive the wings.

As to why the clutch is problematic. The components are the same as what was designed for a 4-6 row plate planter and Deere tried to stretch it just a bit too far using it on a 12 row finger pickup.

Check yesterday"s posts on Implement Alley....same issues. I saw the skips on the 8-30 I had......monitor might blink, I"d look back, everything was turning. Crop comes up, 8 rows skip. Your clutch is worn out!!! IA posts talk about a temp fix with washers....but in the off season, rip it apart- replace the clutch. BTW- on the 8-30, I didn"t take everything apart, I cut the shaft, replaced the clutch, and spliced it back together......shaft went thru too many bearings I didn"t need to mess with.

I replaced mine this winter it was doing the same thing on mine it was not all that bad to get the shaft out we soaked it good for a few weeks before we did it when you have it apart replace the bearings too they are not that much from shoup's better to do it all at once.
