: I saw the posting below about the Cub Cadet 44"
deck that cuts poorly. This seems to be a
universal problem with this deck. I have an 1810
Hydro and its been lousy from the first day.
Actually, my mother bought it new and gave it to
me when it was about 4 years old and went back to
using the old 1960 IHC Cub Cadet which cut much
better.
: Someone else noted that the front of the deck is
so low that the grass is pushed over and isn't
lifted when the blades pass over which is true and
levelling the deck can help, cutting the lower
part away can help.
: Here's MY FIX: Install a second set of blades
at 90 degrees to the old ones on the shaft and run
the nuts securely back onto the shaft. The grass
is lifted much better and the grass clippings are
much finer instead of badly bruised and dishcarged
nearly whole. IT WORKS GREAT!!! My yard and
orchard have not looked so nice for years. When I
mowed the orchard after the modification, the
twigs from last year's pruning were lifted up,
cut, and thrown out after being mowed last year
and so far this year.

: Try it, you'll like it ---BUT BE CAREFUL MAKE
SURE THE BLADES ARE ON SECURELY AND THAT THREAD IS
STILL STICKING OUT BEYOND THE NUTS. DON'T CREATE
A POTENTIAL HAZARD.

Ken: Thanks for the tip. I was begining to think I was the only one who thought this 44 inch deck had poor performance, I see that your mom had it pinned from the get go! I too have an Original and it cuts great even with old dull worn out blades. This 44A in stock configuration is an embarassment. I an going to add the extra blades and am looking forward to trying it out. Mike

Today's Featured Article - Field Modifications (Sins of the Farmer) - by Staff. Picture a new Chevrolet driving down the street without it's grill, right fender and trunk lid. Imagine a crude hole made in the hood to accommodate a new taller air cleaner, the fender wells cut away to make way for larger tires, and half of a sliding glass door used to replace the windshield. Top that off with an old set of '36 Ford headlight shells bolted to the hood. Pretty unlikely for a car... but for a tractor, this is pretty normal. It seems that more often than not they a ...
