POOR CUTTING CUB CADET 44" DECK---HERE'S MY FIX

Posted by Ken McWilliams on June 22, 1998 at 18:44:23:

I saw the posting below about the Cub Cadet 44" deck that cuts poorly. This seems to be a universal problem with this deck. I have an 1810 Hydro and its been lousy from the first day. Actually, my mother bought it new and gave it to me when it was about 4 years old and went back to using the old 1960 IHC Cub Cadet which cut much better.
Someone else noted that the front of the deck is so low that the grass is pushed over and isn't lifted when the blades pass over which is true and levelling the deck can help, cutting the lower part away can help.
Here's MY FIX: Install a second set of blades at 90 degrees to the old ones on the shaft and run the nuts securely back onto the shaft. The grass is lifted much better and the grass clippings are much finer instead of badly bruised and dishcarged nearly whole. IT WORKS GREAT!!! My yard and orchard have not looked so nice for years. When I mowed the orchard after the modification, the twigs from last year's pruning were lifted up, cut, and thrown out after being mowed last year and so far this year.

Try it, you'll like it ---BUT BE CAREFUL MAKE SURE THE BLADES ARE ON SECURELY AND THAT THREAD IS STILL STICKING OUT BEYOND THE NUTS. DON'T CREATE A POTENTIAL HAZARD.

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
