We have a 1985 Big red,boy is on it now!Does yours have a kick starter? that is the only way we start ours because I haven't bought a battery yet.anyway since there is no battery the light isn't on but comes on when it starts.sounds like you might have a short in the neutral safety switch if there is one which you might be able to bypass but transmission would still have to be in neutral to start.
