Agree on it being too long leading to problems in hilly terrain. On cutting you may have to cut both halves. Depends upon how it's made. I had to do one on my broadcast spreader....the red conical ones that hold about 500#. I have had a mower come loose and the shaft separated. What I didn't realize was that the shaft had mass and we have gravity! The shaft came out, hit the ground and kept turning without even as much as a bounce. No big deal.
