Use a horizontal shaft engine and put a twist in the belt between the engine and the vertical shaft the blade is on. You will need to make the blade shaft spin faster than the engine anyway. Better make it self propelled unless you can get your wife to push that heavy beast.
I have a high wheel push mower that has a bad vertical shaft engine on it. One of these days I plan on putting a horizontal shaft gas engine on it.
