I only do a small area any more and put them say 6-12 inches apart from each other. I till the ground so as to be nice and flat throw them down and cover with 6 inches of straw. As they grow you can keep adding more straw and the taters will be in the straw when it comes time to dig them up. I have seen straw piled up over 3 foot tall and the guy would just pull the plant. This guy did this in the same box for well over a decade and had taters that way year round
