I think this car has a "clock spring" in the steering column under the steering wheel. The wheel has to be removed to access it and one needs to expect anything while they are taking it apart, especially if it has an air bag. I didn't do any research before posting so don't take anything I say for the gospel.
This coil like affair takes the place of the roller that engages a circular contact plate for the various controls on and in the steering column. Just speculation...
