One of my high school classmates lived on a farm that had its buildings about halfway up a long steep hill. All the land around the buildings was open farmland. A couple of times my classmate had sledding parties there. Her Dad would run a crawler tractor up and down the hill to pack the snow and make a good sledding course.
It was amazing! On a metal runner sled, I estimate that I was able to get up over 60 miles per hour, and the downhill run was nearly a mile long. If there were bumps, you would go airborne for short distances, and it was fairly hard to control the sled. I have never been that fast on a sled, before or since. Unfortunately it was also a long walk back to the top of the steep hill, so you couldn"t make very many runs in an afternoon. They were some of the best parties I attended in high school--great fun!
