Animal,
Based on the number of desktop printers that are out there, I must certainly be wrong in my opinion. However, I personally, have never had a desktop printer that I was completely satisfied with.
I currently have a Lexmark S405 and an Epson R320 at home. I have an HP (but I can't remember the model number right now) at work. Honestly, I wouldn't recommend any of them to a friend.

Good luck with how you proceed. I don't know what I'll try next.
