I got rid of thr CAT and DPF shortly after I bought my '08 new. Best money I ever spent. 4 mpg increase across the board, and just runs better. The regen cycle is normally triggered by exhaust pressure due to the DPF getting full. When you eliminate the DPF, the backpressure is gone, but the computer will eventually trigger the regen cycle anyway after a certain amount of time, and will never shut off since there is no heat build up with the DPF missing. In other words, you must have a programmer so the regen cycle is deleted. Also, since the regen cycle injects extra fuel into the exhaust stroke, some fuel will get past the rings. If your truck isn't using any oil, the oil level will increse between oil changes. I would rather not have fuel-diluted oil in the crankcase. Getting rid of the DPF will get you better fuel milage and make the engine last longer.
