Seems like I have a book around there with a picture of a JD L/LA that has a set of steel clamped outside the rubber. The steel didn't appear to actually touch the ground unless the rubber sank, thus allowing the steel to bite and "paddle" the tractor through. Seems like maybe in the book they called em Sand Wheels?
Seems like a while back there was an article in antique power with similar things that would go on the N series Ford's.. or maybe it was even Fordsons.. I'd have to dig through the pile and find it.
my guess would "explain" the rough ride theory away, and would make the "stand outs" make a little sense, at least in my mind..
