Fuel mileage seems to vary quite a bit too. Some people claim to get 20 MPG, others that I know check the mileage average in the 10-14 range when empty, 6-12 when loaded (also depends on what they consider loaded - power stoke or non turbo engine).
The overall condition of the truck will probably tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. 244K isn't that bad on a well maintained one, could be at the end of its useful life for one that's been abused.
My brother had a 1991 7.3, the truck was POS that was rusted out through the floors, fenders and cab corners. Straight pipes out that back with no mufflers, under heavy load it smoked like it was on fire. Usually only had 3 or 4 working glow plugs. He was onstantly jumping it to get it started when it was 50 degrees or colder. He ran it that way for years and sold it with 400K on it. He was afraid to put money in it because once he started where would he stop.
