Since I dont know alot about Diesel trucks.. Is 244000 alot of miles on a diesel engine.. 7.3..??? what about that kind of mileage on the trans, etc.??

There will be a lot of replies. I see it as 250k on the vehicle not just the engine. For me it is i lot considering all of the other components.

Depends alot on the kindof miles, and the care that was taken of it.
I've got a 7.3 with 260k on it that is gettin a bit tired. But i wasn't very nice to the poor thing when I was younger--if I was going anywhere, I was doin it at 80 mph. Tires would only last 15k and brakes would rarely make 20K. It's got it's 3rd auto trans behind it.
Have another with 180k on it that runs as strong as it did 100,000 ago. BUT, I didn't drive it like it was stolen, and have been a little better about maintanence. (Funny what a few years of maturing will do to a fellars driving habits;-) It has it's 2nd auto trans, and I expect it to go at least another 150k before it needs replaced.

Great rigs.

I just sold a 99 f250 with a 6 speed that had 187 and ran like a top.. Its all about care... I just bought an 03 7.3 with 73k miles and it runs just as good as my previous... I would be scared of it with that many miles if it was a good deal and had a clean body and frame. Depending on care you will probably need ball joints and such but its not a terrible job to change them out.

My neighbor has an '01 Dodge diesel with over 600,000 miles on it. The truck is trashed many times over, but still forges on. It's had a few repairs, granted, but nothing major to engine or tranny. He's a dairy farmer. Anyone who's ever been around a dairy knows that equipment gets tortured. He jokes about getting a newer truck and putting this engine in it so he can wear out a 2nd truck.

My 1995 has 343000 and I still drive it. Injector O rings and a trans plus a few other minor things. Oh, the air condition compressor stopped turning last week. Been a good truck.

It's not just the engine that's a concern. The whole truck has that many miles on it. What find of care or abuse has the truck had? Take a hard look at it then decide.

Fuel mileage seems to vary quite a bit too. Some people claim to get 20 MPG, others that I know check the mileage average in the 10-14 range when empty, 6-12 when loaded (also depends on what they consider loaded - power stoke or non turbo engine).

The overall condition of the truck will probably tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. 244K isn't that bad on a well maintained one, could be at the end of its useful life for one that's been abused.

My brother had a 1991 7.3, the truck was POS that was rusted out through the floors, fenders and cab corners. Straight pipes out that back with no mufflers, under heavy load it smoked like it was on fire. Usually only had 3 or 4 working glow plugs. He was onstantly jumping it to get it started when it was 50 degrees or colder. He ran it that way for years and sold it with 400K on it. He was afraid to put money in it because once he started where would he stop.

7.3 ford is the best ,, as others say,, its the miles on the rest of the truck to watch out for ... mycummins 12 valve is best ,,it has been outside all its life and i noticed some rust ,, motor is perfect at 330 k miles , gonna to keep that truck under a roof ...

I've had a few 7.3 trucks. My 94 was sold to my son at 176,000 and only had put the torque converter in it. He sold it at 189,000 and bought a 91 dodge. The guy that bought it ran it to 279,000 and sold it to another guy and the last time my son talked to the guy it had 495,00 and he just put the trans in it and he put universal joints in it because he new we had not done that. I had a 99 and it only had 70,000 when it was totaled. My 96 has 330,000 on it and is running good. Trans was replaced around 110,00 because the front trans seal went out because I towed empty trailer without pushing the tow button in and didn't know the trans was leaking oil. Have a 06 6 liter and you can have that piece of junk. Never buy another ford diesel truck.

could be the end or the middle , I have a Dodge and the diesel in it went 257k and it was very well taken car of . the only thing we could figure is an injector stuck and broke the crank . I would figure on the life span according to Ford being an average of 350k before a complete overhaul.

It'll start needing some attention soon but nothing major. As others say the truck itself will start needing things. Check out the ball joints and tie rod ends, and wheel bearings as they start going out around 200,000- 250,000 miles.

Hi
I bought a 99 7.3 4x4 auto last year to fix up. Its got 525000 KMS on it. motor starts and runs good, put new batteries in last night. started it in a cold Manitoba blizzard this morning without pluggin it in, and it fired up as good as my 5.7 GM gas. The bodys not bad but it needs a lot of front end work for the safety test up here in Canada.
The motors heavy and hard on parts like others have said. I looked at a 6.0 diesel on an 03 when i got this. Everybody told me to buy the 7.3 as it would be a better truck with twice the kms on the motor. The 6.0 ford diesel is rubbish if you get a bad one. all I hear of is problems and no good ones round here so steer clear of them.
I know one guy had a 7.3 his guys all drove it like it was stolen. Got 950.000 on it never touched the motor. Only reason they stopped using it was a guy crashed into it on a parts run down south.
Ask me in a month how I like mine it's in my shop now being fixed for the safety.
