Athletic departments generate millions of dollars for universities because a single fan is willing to pay hundreds of dollars to sit in a nose-bleed section for two hours to watch a football game in 15° weather. Multiply that seat by 50,000 (more or less, depending on the size of the stadium) and, yea, it's a big money maker. Don't get me wrong, I like sports and sports has helped SOME kids become doctors, lawyers, or get other high-paying jobs. In just about any profession you pick, I'm sure athletics have helped the kid get his/her diploma. However, there's more to it than that also. My daughter did athletics in high school, but chose to go to college on an academic ride. (BTW, she"s 6'4", so if she wanted to go the athletic route, she could have) She is going to a four-year college that has an enrollment of about 24,000 students for the fall of 2012. She aced her calculus, physics and tough engineering classes this first semester. Despite all of the athletic students having tutors given to them by the college, all the football, basketball and most of the other kids in her classes that have athletic scholarships have either failed, dropped out of class or (surprise!) never enrolled in the tough classes that take lots of study time. Have you ever listened to some of the athletics talk on camera after the game? Unless they get picked up by a pro team, do you think they really have a chance at getting a decent job?
